Our district (The Roaring Fork School District) is a standards-based district. This means that we teach the standards adopted by our district. These are the Colorado Academic Standards. Our goal is to teach the standards so that students are proficient or advanced in them. Sometimes this learning occurs quickly. Sometimes, this takes time as not all students learn at the same pace. If some students have mastered a concept, they will be working on advancing their learning, or on new concepts, while those students who are still not proficient are catching up. In everything we do in class, I am always striving to make sure that my students understand concepts at a deep level and that they can use those concepts in real-world situations.
Students earn grades based on the standards. The grades are:
1 Unsatisfactory means they do not yet understand the concept.
2 Partially Proficient means that they understand the concept partially. They are beginning to grasp the concept, but have not yet mastered it.
3 Proficient means that they have mastered the concept.
4 Advanced means that they understand the concept and can apply it in new situations, can think about it in new ways, and/or can take their learning of this concept to a new level.
